The cold weather hitting much of Britain has intensified so much that a waterfall has completely frozen in Wales.

Temperatures as low as -10 and heavy snowfall has already caused travel disruption and forced hundreds of schools to close, as a cold front dubbed "the Beast from the East" sweeps over the country.

The wintry blast brought snow to the Brecon Beacons and froze the water near a peak called Pen y Fan, forming icicles and turning a waterfall into a magical winter wonderland.

The Met Office said that by the end of Wednesday, more than 20 centimetres of snow may have accumulated in parts of the UK.

These maps show just how cold it is in some areas today.

BBC Weather meteorologist Gemma Plumb said:

On Wednesday and Thursday it is going to feel bitterly cold with a lot of areas seeing maximum temperatures below freezing.

It will feel more like -10C or -14C in some parts and there will be heavy snow showers in the East, particularly in north-east Britain."
