Donald Trump has claimed he cancelled secret peace talks with the Taliban at Camp David in an astonishing outburst yesterday.
The president abruptly announced last night that talks with insurgents had fallen apart just days before the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.
He said the talks broke down after the Taliban claimed responsibility for an attack in Kabul that killed at least 12 people.
The US and the Afghanistan government have been trying to negotiate an end to the 18 year Afghan war for months now, but this is bizarre.
It’s a cliché but seriously, imagine what Republicans would have said if Barack Obama had done this.
For example, here’s what Trump said about Obama’s discussions with the Taliban in 2012.
And now he’s invited them to the US, secretly… days before the anniversary of 9/11...
Although Al-Qaeda and Osama Bin-Laden claimed responsibility for the terror attack, the Taliban helped protect the terrorist group in Afghanistan for years.
It's hard to see how “inviting the Taliban to Camp David” fits in with being tough on terrorism.
A Taliban spokesperson told the Associated Press that they could not immediately confirm Trump’s claim about the Camp David meeting.
