Trump said there’s ‘a lot of sand’ in Syria and the woman behind him had an incredible reaction

Donald Trump compared the recent conflict in northern Syria and Turkey’d invasion of the region as nothing more than playing with sand - and one woman’s baffled facial expression is all of us.

During an Oval Office meeting with Italian president Sergio Mattarella, he told reporters:

Our soldiers are not in harm’s way, as they shouldn’t be, as two countries fight over land that has nothing to do with us. And the Kurds are much safer now. The Kurds know how to fight and as I said, they’re not angels.

And then he defended his decision to pull troops up with the following:

Syria may have some help with Russia and that’s fine. They’ve got a lot of sand over there. So there’s a lot of sand that they can play with. Let them fight their own wars.

At this point the female Italian translator behind him, who had been writing notes up until that point, pauses and looks at the POTUS with a look that is equal parts bafflement and displeasure on her face.

The internet quickly picked up on it, and turned it into a meme.
