Former president Donald J. Trump’s top picks for running mate in the 2024 presidential election have been revealed, and MAGA fans have mixed feelings.
In a recent interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, Trump said he would “certainly” consider Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, but that he now views him more as a competitor.
“He’s a friend of mine. I endorsed Ron, and after I endorsed him, he took off like a rocket ship,” he told Bartiromo. “He’s done a great job as governor.”
Trump was also recently seen interacting with South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
“They’re all begging me. They all come here,” Trump allegedly boasted to an adviser, who anonymously shared the event with POLITICO.
Should Trump go with a female running-mate, the rumored picks also include Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn.
Mark Meadows, Trump’s last White House chief of staff, and Richard Grenell, Trump’s former acting national security director, are also being considered.
One Twitter user scanned the POLITICO article and rounded up the top seven.
The response to Trump’s allegedly picks has been mixed, with one user saying, “All good, except for Meadows.” Another said no to every pick, “except for Pompeo and Blackburn.” Some said that DeSantis as a VP would be “a waste,” with the majority of the replies voting yes for Tim Scott.
“Noem would betray him on the first day,” one user wrote. A few others wondered why former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley wasn’t on the list.
“I’m not a big fan of any of these people, but I feel like they all could do less damage as VP than governors and senators, so I’m fine with it, I guess,” someone wrote.
“He would make god-awful choices his top picks. We saw four years of this already,” said another.
One Twitter user suggested that the alleged picks were a smokescreen, and that the former president will likely go with someone the public is completely unaware of.
