Another day, another mystifying interview from the president of the United States.
This week it was reported that the US would be launching a global program with the aim of decriminalising homosexuality worldwide.
Reaction to the program has been mixed, with some commentators accusing the US of using gay rights as a strategy to turn nations against Iran – America’s current political nemesis.
Suspicious social media users have pointed out the Trump administration's previous anti-LGBT+ policies, such as the trans military ban and promises to roll-back LGBT+ discrimination protections, while others have highlighted vice president Mike Pence's past endorsement of widely discredited gay "conversion therapy".
Though regardless of its intentions, you’d think Trump would be keen to shout from the rooftops that he’s taking on such an important and necessary cause.
Well, think again.
Speaking to journalists in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump seemed to have no idea about the initiative aimed at decriminalising homosexality in 70 countries worldwide.
A copy of the exchange, taken from a White House transcript, was posted on Twitter. When asked about the new campaign, Trump said:
I don’t know which report you’re talking about, We have many reports.
People were confused about why Trump doesn’t seem to know what his own administration is doing.
Some thought it was a deliberate attempt to ignore the issue to avoid offending his conservative base.
Whereas others thought the most likely option was either forgetfulness or ignorance.
The mystery continues…
