While Barack Obama has pledged to use his final year as President to force through new measures to curb gun violence, the US remains a nation divided when it comes to the 2nd Amendment.
As of New Year's Day, a new law in Texas allows people to openly carry a handgun in a holster on their waist or on their shoulder in most public places.
In fact, this paragraph in a national newspaper sums up just how gun-friendly the state has become:
The line appeared at the start of a New York Times article, which was openly critical of the country's gun laws last month, about reaction to the new rules in Texas.
It also quotes a former army sergeant who gave his daughter a pink .22-calibre rifle for her 12th birthday.
He said: "I think everybody is overreacting."
