Star gazers across the northern hemisphere were treated to a stunning display of shooting stars on Wednesday night with a new moon providing the perfect blank canvas for the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower occurs every year when the Earth passes through the cloud of debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle.
