There's a petition to ban Donald Trump from the UK on hate speech grounds

It's no secret that Donald Trump is a fan of Scotland - or more specifically, building Scottish golf courses.

But is Scotland a fan of him?

It appears not. Suzanne Kelly from Aberdeen campaigned against Trump's plan to build "the greatest golf course in the world" on the Menie Estate in 2013 on various environmental grounds.

And now, with Trump cranking up the outrage-o-meter in his bid to become the Republican presidential nominee, Kelly has decided to raise her game too, petitioning the government to ban Trump from entry to the British Isles on hate speech grounds.

Citing his comments which likened all Mexicans to "rapists" and calls to monitor the Muslim population in the US, Kelly wrote:

The signatories believe Donald J Trump should be banned from UK entry for his continued, unrepentant hate speech and unacceptable behaviour. His unacceptable behaviour is well documented, and we feel it foments racial, religious and nationalistic intolerance which should not be welcome in the UK.

The UK has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech. This same principle should apply to Donald J Trump. We cannot see how the United Kingdom can condone his entry to the country when many people have been barred for less.

In recent years the UK has barred entry to (among others) the American rapper Tyler the Creator and anti-mosque campaigner Pamela Geller.

The petition, which should be live in a few days, only needs 10,000 signatures before parliament is compelled to respond. If 100,000 signatories add their names, the anti-Trump petition will be considered for debate in the Commons.
