Indian prime minister praises Bangladeshi counterpart's courage 'despite being a woman'

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked outrage by praising his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina for her courage to fight terrorism “despite being a woman”.

DespiteBeingAWoman was one of the top trends on Twitter yesterday. Mr Modi was on a two-day visit to Bangladesh on Sunday when he made the remarks.

“I am happy that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, despite being a woman, is openly saying that she has zero tolerance for terrorism,” he said.
