It might not come as much of a surprise to anyone who flunked French or Spanish GCSEs (or even aced them but then proceeded to forget everything), but when it comes to languages, the UK lags well behind the rest of the EU.
As this map from Statista shows, the average person in the UK speaks 1.6 languages, behind Spain (1.7), France (1.8) and Germany (2).
Meanwhile, Luxembourg (3.6), the Netherlands (3.2) and Slovenia (3) put everyone to shame.
