SNL sidestepped the jokes to remember those lost in Paris attacks

Foregoing the usual reel of set-ups and punchlines, this week Saturday Night Live opened the show with an emotional speech honouring those who lost their lives during the Paris attacks.

SNL cast member, Cecily Strong, took to the stage with no introduction, no backing music and simply began to speak.

Paris is the City of Light, and here in New York City, we know that light will never go out.

Our love and support is with everyone tonight. We stand with you.

Strong then repeated the sentiment in French before delivering that well-rehearsed line: "And now, live from New York, it's Saturday night."
