Serena Williams’s husband perfectly shut down a “racist, sexist clown” who commented on his wife’s weight.
Ion Țiriac, a pro tennis player turned billionaire businessman, reportedly said of Williams:
“At this age and the weight she is now, she does not move as easily as she did 15 years ago. Serena is a sensational player. If she had a little decency, she would retire.”
Williams’s husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, initially hit back by saying:
“Safe to say no one gives a damn what Ion Țiriac thinks.”
He later added:
“Had to Google it… turns out my 3-year-old has more Grand Slam victories than [him].”
Țiriac never won a Grand Slam in the singles category (although won one playing doubles).
Williams, meanwhile, won 23 by herself, the most of any player in the Open Era.
She won one while she was eight weeks pregnant with her daughter Olympia – hence Ohanian’s put down.
Țiriac has commented on Williams’s weight before. In 2018, he said:
“With all due respect, but Serena Williams is 36 and 90 pounds. I would like to see something else.”
Williams called his comments sexist.
And it seems Ohanian has had enough. After responding to Țiriac he tweeted:
“2021 and no holding back when a racist/sexist clown with a platform comes for my family.”
