As prophet Nelly Furtado once sang: “Flames to dust. Lovers to friends. Why do all good things come to an end?”
But so it must be, and that is why today presenter Sandi Toksvig announced she is leaving the Great British Bake Off after nearly three years hosting the show alongside comedian Noel Fielding.
Toksvig joined after GBBO moved to Channel 4 from the BBC and had big shoes to fill – the beloved show had jettisoned three core team members during the re-location.
Presenting duo Mel and Sue did not follow the programme to its new home, along with head judge Mary Berry.
At the time, people were worried that Toksvig and Fielding wouldn’t be able to hold their own, but the pair have managed to carve out a solid place in the nation’s hearts.
Which is why fans are now truly devastated to hear Toksvig is leaving the show to work on other projects (including a spelling bee for illiterate adults).
There was still time for jokes however, as some questioned whether Toksvig had let the relevant parties know of her decision before time…
And others had bright ideas about potential replacements in the role.
Fare thee well Sandi; may your bottoms never be soggy and your tarts always crisp.
