The Mayor of London read out racist abuse he receives online and he wants social media companies to do more to combat hate speech.
Speaking at the South by Southwest festival in Texas, he read out vicious messages sent to him on Twitter, several of which threatened his life and were Islamophobic in nature.
During the conference, he pointed out the damage abuse can have on minority children online:
I don't read these out to be portrayed as a victim, or to ask for sympathy.
But ask yourself this - what happens when young boys and girls from minority backgrounds see this kind of thing on their timelines - or experience it themselves?
And what about young girls and women who are being driven from these platforms - reversing our long fight for gender equality?
Khan also created a powerful video in the style of Jimmy Kimmel's ‘Celebrities Read Mean Tweets’, in which he read through the abusive messages.
One said:
I say KILL the Mayor of London and you will be rid of ONE Muslim Terrorist.
Another incited racial hatred and violence, reading:
Muslims need to be shot or hanged!! The mayor is doing nothing about attacks.
A third was just as atrocious, and read:
Muslims have no dignity. I wish Sadiq Khan would just blow himself up like they all do. He might get his 12 virgins.
The Muslim Council of Britain urged people to take Islamophobia “seriously” after Darren Osborne was convicted of murder and attempted murder for driving a van into a group of Muslims near a North London Mosque in a terror attack.
