Remember the internet's favourite eyewitness? He's been arrested

The latest eye witness extraordinaire to grace local news in the US has quickly paid the price of fame.

Courtney Barnes, a Mississippi man who became an overnight sensation because of his memorable account of witnessing a non-fatal crash on his way to "get me a piece of burger", was recognised during his star turn by local shop Swellophonic, who suspect him of shoplifting, according to WAPT.

A police spokersperson was quoted as saying that Barnes was wanted on two contempt of court charges relating to $1,700 of unpaid traffic tickets and a warrant for the shoplifting charge in Jackson.

Recognising his 15 minutes of fame were up, Barnes - who gave his name as Ruby Evans in the interview - reportedly turned himself into police on Thursday, accompanied by his mother.

Barnes is due in court in two weeks.
