14 signs racism is alive and well in the US

The Charlottesville protest by 'Unite the Right' was the scene of a death of a young woman when a car was driven into peaceful demonstrators.

Heather Heyer was 32-years-old when a car driven by a white supremacist was driven into her and a crowd of other counter-demonstrators.

The President of the United States then condemned 'violence and bigotry on many sides'.

Shockingly, some people still do not believe America has a problem with racism.

For a country built in the time of slavery, this is not surprising, but some signs of racism in America are more blatant than others:

4. Ghosts are considered to be more common than the racism problem

A higher proportion of white Americans believe they have touched a ghost than those who believe black people experience discrimination.

Cliven Bundy, a rancher in long dispute with the federal government, was trying to explain an earlier remark "I wonder if negroes weren't better off as slaves".

14. The shooting of Philando Castile

High-profile shootings occur frequently. One in July 2016 was particularly potent:

Philando Castile, 32, was shot dead by police in Falcon Heights, Minnesota on 6 July 2016.

His girlfriend live-streamed the event's aftermath, showing him covered in blood, saying he was shot as he reached for his driving licence.

During the video, Lavish Reynolds says they were pulled over for a broken rear light.

His shooting followed the death of Alton Sterling, who was shot dead by police on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The death of Sterling, 37, has been protested by hundreds of people already. A video of Sterling being pinned to the ground by police has emerged, and an autopsy showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and back.

Officers said they were responding to an anonymous caller who said a man in a red shirt selling music CDs had threatened him with a gun.
