Man proposes in front of a comet that's only visible every 6,800 years

A man’s star-studded marriage proposal photos in front of a rare comet have been orbiting all over social media.

John Nicotera took to Twitter to share the remarkable photos of him getting down on one knee to his now-fiancé Erica Pendrak.

But it wasn’t an easy ride – it took ages to planet... ok, no more space puns.

Speaking to Syracuse.com, Nicotera said he had originally planned to take Pendrak to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon in July, but the trip had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He said:

I was bummed that it was canceled. Any plan I came up just didn’t seem to compare to Crater Lake.

The idea of proposing in front of a comet came to him after he saw the news that Comet Neowise was set to be visible in upstate New York earlier this month.

So with the help of a photographer, they set up a location and took the photos at exactly the right time for the comet to be in the sky behind them as the proposal took place.

And the results are incredible:

People were absolutely loving it:

On the out of this world proposal photos, Pendrak said:

It’s awesome that we have that moment that we can keep and cherish and have, but that it’s being shared is awesome.

Comet Neowise was discovered in March and can be seen in certain parts of the world – including the UK – throughout July.

Nasa confirmed the comet only comes around every 6,800 years.
