Star Trek fans, rejoice. The news we've all been waiting for has arrived: Sir Patrick Stewart will be reprising the role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new series of Star Trek.

The beloved character will feature in a new CBS All Access series that will chronicle his life after Star Trek: The Next Generation and, to put it lightly, people are stoked.

The actor made the announcement during a surprise appearance at the annual Star Trek convention in Los Angeles on Saturday, much to his fans' excitement, reports the BBC.

Speaking to the crowd, he said:

I will always be very proud to have been a part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course.

He continued:

It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions with him.

He also announced the news on Twitter:

Unsurprisingly, after the shock announcement, the Internet got involved pretty quickly.

Some simply expressed their enthusiasm.

And their overwhelming excitement.

Others began to bow down before their overlord.

To Lebron, or not to Lebron?

It was also perceived as a good omen.

Some people are obviously pessimists.

Guess who's back, back again...?

Even Shakespeare was excited.

THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

He's BACK!
