More than one million people have signed a petition to “immediately release” Donald Trump’s full tax returns.
The petition’s web page states that the “unprecedented economic conflicts of this administration” need to be made visible to people, including any foreign influences and financial interests that may put Trump in a compromising position with the US Constitution.
The petition was created on 20 January, the day Trump was inaugurated.
Any petition needs 100,000 signatures in 30 days to gain a response from the White House.
Some voters are concerned Trump is hiding financial ties with Russia, others want to see confirmation that he has properly signed off his businesses.
Anil Dash created the petition.
He told Tech Crunch why:
I wrote this petition because it’s nice for other people to see that they are not alone. Basic compliance with the Constitution is a bare minimum for our elected officials. But if we can’t get the information to verify that, we have no assurance that our president is following the law.
It emerged yesterday that US politicians are getting in on the action, too.
Democrats in Congress are trying to use a little-know law passed in 1924, to force Trump to release his tax returns.
