Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is formally calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump after reading the Mueller report.

AOC has previously been on the fence about impeaching Trump, saying there was “enough misconduct” to justify it but she would ultimately follow the opinion of Democratic party leaders.

The Mueller report has changed that.

She was convinced by the fact that the investigation failed to make a judgement on whether Trump committed obstruction of justice and left that decision open to Congress.

Now, AOC is saying Congress needs to investigate obstruction of justice and support congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s impeachment resolution.

Ocasio-Cortez did note that the plan was unlikely to succeed with a Republican Senate and could hurt Democrats’ 2020 election chances, but she said she could not ignore her responsibility to do it.

The call received a wave of approval from supporters on social media.

But there was criticism as well. Inevitably, some of that came from Trump supporters who always attack Ocasio-Cortez.

But there was also criticism from people on the left of US politics who worry that pushing hard for impeachment will help Trump win in 2020.

And then there was this weird reply referencing Game of Thrones.

An article of impeachment can be passed with a simple majority (more than 50 per cent) in the House of Representatives but the Senate handles impeachment trials and requires a two-thirds majority (67 per cent) to convict the president.

Only two presidents have been impeached, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.

Neither were removed from office.

Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, facing almost certain impeachment over the Watergate scandal, but was never impeached.
