Nigel Farage, being questioned on LBC radio, seemingly defended the comments of a Ukip candidate who was suspended last week for using racist and homophobic slurs.
Kerry Smith, the Ukip candidate for Basildon South in Essex, was dismissed after it was revealed he used the words "disgusting poofters" and referred to a woman with a Chinese name as a “chinky bird”.
Speaking of his dismissal Farage said Smith "speaks in a way that a lot of people from that background do" and also asked "if you and your mates were going out for a Chinese, what do you say you’re going for?"
Presumably he didn't mean "a Chinese.."
I am a bit sad, because Kerry Smith is a rough diamond, he’s a council house boy from East London, left school early and talks and speaks in a way that a lot of people from that background do. Let’s, look, we can pretend. If we like…
- Nigel Farage
So if you’re from a council estate you say ‘poofter’, do you?
- Nick Ferrari
No, no, hang on. If you and your mates were going out for a Chinese, what do you say you’re going for?
- Nigel Farage
I wouldn’t use the word ‘chinky’. Would you?
- Nick Ferrari
No, but a lot of people would.
