Vice President Mike Pence received an unwanted decoration on his holiday home in Aspen, Colorado on Saturday.
It wasn't an old Christmas tree or a "Vote Clinton" placard but a rainbow flag bearing the words:
Make America Gay Again.
According to Aspen Times, the flag was placed on the property by the neighbours of the house when Pence and his wife Karen Sue were staying during the holidays.
Police report that the flag was draped on the stone pillar at the end of the driveways to both homes off Owl Creek Road.
However, the family who displayed the flag was said to be very friendly to the police and Secret Service agents who were present, bringing food to those on duty.
Furthermore, the agents weren't angered by the message and allowed them to place the flag.
Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo told Aspen Times:
He [the man who placed the flag] was real sheepish and thought he might be confronted by the Secret Service or deputies who'd tell him he couldn't do it.
When they said, 'We're not here to control your free speech rights,' they came out with chilli and began feeding them.Â
They've been really nice to us.
The Aspen Times later tried to get a comment about the flag from the residents that produced it.
Their initial efforts failed but they later received an email where a woman named Shannon Slade explained:
(The banners) were actually hung by the daughters of the couple who live in the home, and one of their girlfriends (I'm one of them!) with the full support of their parents.
Pence's views on the LGBT community have been well documented in the past.
The 58-year-old who is a Christian conservative voted against a bill to ban discrimination based on sexuality in the workplace when he was a congressman.
BuzzFeed also reports that Pence backed the Defence of Marriage Act which stopped the federal government from acknowledging same-sex marriages.
An article in the New Yorker also claims that during a meeting with a legal scholar President Trump joked about Pence's views on LGBT people by gesturing towards Pence and saying:
Don't ask that guy - he wants to hang them all.
