A Mississippi man was seen sporting a tremendously racist T-shirt while voting in the midterms, because apparently America has regressed back to the late 1800s.
According to a report by Buzzfeed, Ashleigh Parker was standing in line at her local polling station and noticed a man wearing a T-shirt with a Confederate flag, with the words 'Mississippi Justice', and the image of a noose on it.
Parker wrote in a Facebook post:
It was racist and terrible and I hoped no one saw it. I wish I had said something but I held my tongue because I didn't want to give him any attention.
Another person who was at the polling station also spoke to Buzzfeed about the man and his obscenely racist T-shirt.
They reported that a man named Rashaud told them he took a picture of the man and posted it to Facebook, but later deleted the post due to safety concerns.
Someone purportedly friends with Rashaud shared the image on Twitter, where it quickly went viral as the friend falsely identified the man in the shirt as a poll worker, when in fact he was a voter.
As the damning image made the rounds on social media, people began to identify the man as Clayton John Hickey, a registered nurse who works at a hospital in Memphis and lives in Olive Branch, Mississippi.
The hospital confirmed to Buzzfeed that they are aware of the photo and investigating.
Regional One Health takes the health and well-being of our patients and the community we serve seriously.
All allegations of inappropriate behavior involving employees are reviewed and investigated. Our leadership is investigating and will take appropriate action
Speaking to WMC5 News, McCoy, a 67-year-old black man, remembers being cursed at, spit at and abused simply for the colour of his skin while growing up in Memphis.
He expressed worry due to the fact that Clayton was a registered nurse.
It says to me, in my heart that I think they might do something, you know, chemically or even physically to someone in the hospital
