People are saying Melania looks happier at a funeral with Obama than she ever does with Trump

On Saturday, first lady Melania Trump attended the funeral of Barbara Bush in Houston, Texas.

Funerals are usually solemn events and are an opportunity for those in attendance to pay respects and remember the dearly departed.

Smiles aren't usually on display at these types of events, but Melania was positively beaming and full of radiance.

The reason? Well, we can't be sure, but it could be because she is sitting next to former president Barack Obama, a man she and her husband have publicly criticised in the past.

Perhaps Obama had just told her a really funny anecdote, or she was just won over by his charisma, or maybe it was because her husband, Donald, wasn't around.

Either way, the internet had a lot of thoughts about these images:

Of course, it is a bit morbid to suggest that Melania had a bag full of fun at a funeral, but it's rare to see her in such a happy frame of mind.

There have been plenty of awkward moments between the Trumps since Donald's ascension to the White House and, judging by her Instagram, she often enjoys her own company.

President Trump's absence was curious, but it wouldn't be the first time that a standing president hasn't attended a funeral of a former first lady.

In 2016, Obama did not go to the funeral of Nancy Reagan, while George W Bush, Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan have also missed similar occasions in the past.

According to White House press secretary Lindsay Walters, Trump wouldn't be attending the funeral, where the Clintons were also present, for security reasons.

Walters said in a statement:

To avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush family and friends attending the service, president Trump will not attend.

That being said, it didn't stop Trump jetting off to Mar-A-Lago, now rebranded as the "Southern White House," for another round of golf.

However, just hours after sending that tweet, presumably on his way to Florida, Trump embarked on a Twitter rant against the New York Times, so make of that what you will.

Regardless, Melania looked like she had a pleasant day. Perhaps Donald should allow her to play out with the Obamas a little bit more?
