If annoying all the right people is a skill then Megan Rapinoe is as brilliant off the pitch as she is on it.
The striker has helped America to two successive World Cup triumphs, the most recent of which saw the 34-year-old become the oldest player to score in a World Cup final. She was also named player of the match as her country defeated the Netherlands 2-0 to secure the win.
Rapinoe, an openly gay critic of Donald Trump, has faced criticism from the usual quarters. Trump’s sycophantic English friend Piers Morgan recently took to Twitter with a short clip, stripped of context, in which the footballing legend signed a ball for a young fan but was deemed “arrogant” for not engaging with the youngster in a more meaningful way. The fact that we are unable to see what happened before or after the events of the video didn’t stop it being used against Rapinoe by the usual gang of blowhards.
Unfortunately for Morgan and the rest of the fault-right, another video has surfaced of Rapinoe with fans and it’s longer than seven seconds. In fact, it’s 123 glorious seconds of the Golden Ball winner arriving at Lyon airport and greeting an army of fans with grace and good humour. The highlight is the closing moment in which the sporting legend helps an older fan who clearly has absolutely no idea how to take a selfie, something we can all relate to.
It’s almost as though those with an agenda attempted to present Rapinoe as something she’s not. And that’s, as they say, the tea.
