Access Hollywood host and former Saved By the Bell actor Mario Lopez has drawn criticism after making offensive comments about trans children and their parents.

Lopez appeared on The Candace Owens Show, a conservative podcast, in late June to talk about “the importance of family, faith, and hard work" in Hollywood. But unfortunately the conversation soon veered into judgemental territory.

Owens, a well-known conservative commentator, brought up the topic of trans children. Lopez responded by saying that allowing children to “pick their gender” is “weird” and “strange”.

He said:

My God, if you’re three years old, and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way or you think you’re a boy or girl whatever the case may be I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make this determination then.

Owens then compared a child expressing their true gender to calling themselves a mermaid, saying parents listening to their children’s chosen gender identity is “narcissism, like virtue signalling”. Lopez said parents with kids who want to self-identify their gender must “be the adult in the situation”.

LGBT+ organisation Human Rights Campaign called the comments "dangerous".

People on Twitter reacted with disappointment and anger to the comments.
