Savannah Guthrie, the co-anchor of the Today Show has interviewed 'MAGA hat boy' Nicholas Sandmann after footage of him confronting a Native American protestor went viral.
In the interview, which was previewed on NBC Nightly News, Guthrie can be heard asking Sandmann if he feels he has anything to apologise for.
In the clip, she says:
Do you feel from this experience that you owe anybody an apology? Do you see your own fault in any way?
In response, Sandmann refuses to accept he's done anything wrong. Speaking to the camera, he says:
As far as standing there, I had every right to do so.Â
My position is that I was not disrespectful to Mr. Phillips. I respect him, I would like to talk to him.
I mean, in hindsight, I wish we could’ve walked away and avoided the whole thing.Â
Right, so he was given the opportunity to apologise on national television, and totally didn't admit to doing anything wrong?
Needless to say, the interview preview didn't go down well on Twitter.
Sandmann gained international attention after a video of him apparently harassing a Native American protestor at the Indigenous People's March in Washington went viral. He was in Washington on 18 January on a field trip with his school Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky, at the March For Life protest.
Since it went viral, Covington Catholic High School and the Diocese of Covington released a joint statement:
We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C.
We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.
