Madonna schooling an interviewer about sexuality in 1990 is still very relevant today

For decades, Madonna has been breaking boundaries and provoking outrage from conservatives.

Though resurfaced footage from the early 1990s shows that the queen of pop was often far ahead of her time on some issues. Madonna’s video for ‘Justify My Love’ was banned from several music channels when it was released, including MTV, for being too sexually explicit.

The video for the song had a sexual theme, which - combined with the lyrics “wanting, needing, waiting, for you to justify my love” - was too much for many conservatives.

In the eye of the media storm, Madonna went on TV to defend her video, highlighting an important issue that’s still relevant in contemporary culture. She stated that human sexuality is nothing to be afraid of and that instead of shying away from it we should embrace it.

MTV had a huge problem with Madonna’s nipples being on display in 1990, but with Instagram also banning nipples and Tumblr announcing that it will no longer be hosting nude content, have things really moved on that much?

When asked about the “adult content”, she sarcastically replied:

I think MTV should have their violence hour and I think they should have their degradation to women hour

If we’re going to have censorship, let’s not be hypocrites about it. Let’s not have double standards. We already have these videos that have violence and show degradation to women being shown 24 hours a day, but yet they don’t want a video playing that deals with sex between two consenting adults.
