General Elections in the UK are accompanied by rows over buses, debates and various natural disasters. There might even be some discussion of policies.

But move over “Brexit election”, because this year is turning out to be the “meme election”.

The Liberal Democrats found this out the hard way when they attempted to poke fun at Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson using a meme.

If you’re not familiar with the “distracted boyfriend” meme template, it’s an online classic – the Mr Brightside of the meme world.

The party's take on the meme depicted voters looking away from Corbyn and Johnson, but gazing towards Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson as she walks past. It was tweeted during the ITV leadership debate, which Swinson wasn’t invited to.

Though, naturally, people have wasted no time in roasting the Lib Dems for dipping their toes in the ocean of memes.

Others joked about the well-known fake news story that Jo Swinson shoots stones at squirrels.
