As a result of viral TikTok videos featuring KFC’s coveted Nashville Hot Chicken Tenders, some locations are experiencing a shortage in hot sauce.

The beloved item has been on the KFC menu since 2016, but has spiked in popularity thanks to its newfound TikTok fame of people documenting themselves experiencing the item using the haghtag #NashvilleHotChicken.

“Due to the popularity and high demand of our Nashville Hot sauce, some of our restaurants may be experiencing temporary outages,” a KFC spokesperson confirmed.

Business experts believe the current shortage is a result of suppliers not being able to predict the growth in popularity over a short span of time.

In fact, fast-food item shortages are nothing new. In 2019, just days after its debut, numerous Popeyes locations sold out of their highly-anticipated chicken sandwich, and didn’t until two months later.

In April, many Starbucks locations within the U.S. saw a shortage in oat milk which baristas blame on the newly launched Ice Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso. In addition, there was a shortage in the brown sugar syrup used in the recipe.

The KFC spokesperson added while they’ve recruited TikTok stars to promote its chicken sandwich online, they are not behind the trend on TikTok saying, “we love to see people celebrating their favorite menu items and finding new ways to enjoy and create content with our world-famous fried chicken.”

On May 2nd, YouTuber Trisha Paytas got behind the trend, posting multiple videos of herself experiencing the Nashville Hot tenders for herself.

“Honestly, these are so good,” Paytas exclaimed in the videos. “So worth it!”
