It took dozens of women coming forward and sharing their stories for the press and authorities to begin focusing on the allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein.
And yet, Kevin Spacey's reputation and TV show appear to have been stripped from him just says after four allegations of sexual assault.
The difference? Author Megan Dietz believes it's because Spacey's alleged victims are men, as she explained on a Facebook post that actor Debra Messing shared on Twitter.
Rose McGowan has accused Mr Weinstein of rape, and claims she is just one of many women whose stories have been silenced.
In the first public speech since accusing Weinstein, McGowan said:
I have been silenced for 20 years. I have been slut-shamed, I have been harassed, I have been maligned, and you know what?
I am just like you.
What happened to me behind the scenes happens to all of us in this society.
It cannot stand and will not stand.
Without the strength in numbers, women felt they would not be believed.
Actor Katherine Kendall told the New York Timesthat she was scared telling others because of the possible repercussions:
I'll never work again and no one is going to care or believe me.
