John McDonnell has claimed that the divisions within the Labour party can be healed by a “tea offensive”.
Speaking to the Mirror ahead of the party’s conference in Liverpool this weekend, the Shadow Chancellor said that he and the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn - who is widely expected to be returned to the office today with a comfortable majority - intend to charm reluctant Labour MPs to join the party’s front-bench with a cup of tea and chat.
Whatever the result, if Jeremy wins it, it’s an open door policy to everyone then. We will be talking to as many people as possible, saying to people ‘let’s have a cup of tea’ and can we try not to communicate by Twitter, it’s not the most constructive way of communicating, so let’s have a cup of tea and sit down and that will go on intensively over the next couple of weeks.
Known to be a fan of Jammy Dodgers, let’s hope he’s well stocked up after the announcement of today’s leadership results.
