The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro has bizarrely suggested that people 'poop every other day' in order to protect the environment.

The controversial right-wing populist of the South American nation made the statement after a journalist asked him how he intends to preserve the environment as well as development the country's agricultural industry.

The 64-year-old said:

It's enough to eat a little less. You talk about environmental pollution.

It's enough to poop every other day. That will be better for the whole world.

His quite frankly ridiculous suggestion comes amid accusations that deforestation of the Amazon has increased under his government, which led him to sack the head of the agency that released the report, as per the BBC.

Deforestation has been reported to be responsible for a quarter of the greenhouse effect on the planet but Bolsanaro appears to be going ahead with his plans despite date from Brazil's space agency showing that in June activity in the Amazon was up 88 per cent compared to 12 months ago.

Bolsanaro's suggestion, which is almost definitely a joke hasn't been received too well on social media.
