If you're worried you're not having enough sex with your partner, fear not.

A recent study suggested that having sex just once a week is enough to boost happiness levels in a relationship.

Obviously having more sex than that isn't a bad thing, but it also doesn't make a darn bit of difference to how happy you'll feel.

Led by researchers at the University of Toronto and published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, the study analysed data from two surveys - including a 23-year study of over 25,000 people - to draw their conclusions.

Around two-thirds of participents were married or in long-term romantic relationships.

While researchers discovered associations between sex and happiness levels, the most interesting conclusion they drew was that the benefits of sex levelled out at once a week.

Study leader Amy Muise told CNN: I do think couples can end up feeling pressure to try to engage in sex as frequently as possible.

Once a week is maybe a more realistic goal to set than thinking you have to have sex every day, and that feels overwhelming, and you avoid it.

She added that once a week was an average, and so couples having more frequent sex should not be inclined to "cut down".

"Certainly there are couples for whom having sex less freuquently will be fine fo their happiness, and there are couples who will get increases in happiness if they have sex more than once a week."
