While some sections of Britain's media bang on about the "hordes" of "benefit seekers", "boat people" and "savages" lining up at Calais to inundate the country, perhaps it's time to get a bit of perspective on the issue.
As a share of the EU total, Britain isn't receiving anywhere near as many asylum applications as some of its neighbours, as this chart from Statista, using Eurostat data, shows.
There are currently some 60 million displaced people in the world - nearly as much as the entire population of Britain in fact.
