We love a good Reddit fan theory, and while some are genuinely intriguing - others leave us completely baffled.
Last week, a user posted a wild theory that the Grinch is the sole survivor of a brutal genocide, committed by - you guessed it: the Whos.
Posted in the FanTheories subreddit by u/EquivalentInflation, the overall theory definitely makes some interesting, albeit creative, points. For those who haven’t read, or seen any of the film adaptations of Dr. Seuss’ most memorable piece of fiction, allow us to provide you with some context.
The children’s story revolves around a grouchy, solitary green creature, who attempts to put an end to Christmas by stealing Christmas from the Whos. Who are the Whos? They’re the people who inhabit Whoville. Obviously.
There’s a lot of unpack in this Reddit fan theory, so let’s take it step-by-step.
The Grinch’s physical attributes vastly differ from the other Whos.
“He’s a member of a completely different race than the Whos... but there’s no other member of that race in sight,” the user wrote.
“So, where are the rest of his people? Simple: he’sthe Grinch, not a Grinch. They’ve been wiped out.”
The Grinch likely fled from the genocide, which explains why he’s the sole survivor and resides alone on Mount Crumpet
“The Grinch survived (likely due to him being frozen in ice, only to be thawed out 100 years later by two siblings). More realistically, he likely fled, or was already living as a hermit, allowing him to escape the slaughter.”
Christmas was likely the anniversary of the Grinch Genocide, which explains why the Grinch hates Christmas.
“He wants to forget about them, but on that day, the noise they make causes it to be impossible for him to do so. Even more enraging, they’re singing religious hymns of the religion that killed his people,” the writer highlights.
He didn’t grow to love the Whos, he assimilated to escape a life of poverty and seclusion
“It’s Who propaganda, to cover up the harsh truth: The Grinch had grown depressed, and knew the Whos would kill him for ruining their special day. He was open to death, especially if it involved screwing them over, and letting them know the Grinches would never give up.”
