Despite what’s currently happening around the world, Grimes and Elon Musk’s newborn’s name still managed to make headlines.
On May 4, they also announced the name of the baby - X Æ A-12, which is supposed to be pronounced like “Archangel”, somehow.
Even so, the pronunciation of their child’s name led to many, many memes – particularly because New York it girl Chloe Sevigny’s baby was born on the same day (his name is comparatively regular: Vanja). In a series of tweets, Grimes clarified the reasons behind each letter / symbol, explaining that the child was named after the unknown variable X, Grimes’ spelling of artificial intelligence and a kind of aircraft that was apparently their “favorite”.
But unusual names for children are fairly commonplace in Hollywood, especially if you’re a celebrity. Look no further than Gwyneth Paltrow, who gave birth to a baby girl with then-husband Chris Martin in 2004. They named her Apple, which almost sounds boring compared to X Æ A-12.
The Instagram account Comments by Celebs caught a comment that Paltrow left on a post by InStyle magazine, which announced the birth and name of Grimes and Musk’s baby. She tagged in Chris Martin and suggested that their baby name may not be so controversial anymore.
Paltrow said in an interview with Oprah in 2004 that the name had been Martin’s idea, and that she was surprised people reacted so negatively to it when people are named after flowers all the time.
