Police in the US state of Georgia are searching for answers after a statue of a Revolutionary War general was vandalised with fake eyes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that local police were investigating after Savannah's Nathanael Greene Monument was vandalised earlier this week.
Posting on Facebook, the City of Savannah Government said:
It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter, in fact, it's a crime.
The post has been liked thousands of time in the last few days.
Bianca Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Savannah Police Department, toldBuzzFeed News that surveillance footage of the statue has been reviewed. Apparently, the vandalism could also constitute trespassing.
She said:
If we didn’t do anything this thing could get out of hand. We want people to understand we don’t want to see this kind of thing happening. They need to know they can’t go around doing whatever they want to our statues.
According to Georgia law, vandalising a grave marker, monument or memorial is considered criminal trespass, which is a misdemeanour offence.
Although thankfully the googly eyes did not damage the statue.
