A father-to-be was killed in an explosion while building a device for his child’s gender-reveal party.

Police said 28-year-old Christopher Pekny, from Liberty in New York, died on Saturday. His brother Michael, 27, was also injured by the blast but survived.

The victim’s oldest brother, Peter Jr, said the incident was “the freakiest of freak incidents that I could never imagine.”

According to the New York Times, police said the device consisted of a pipe.

Gender-reveal parties have become an increasingly popular way for expecting parents to announce whether they are going to have a girl or a boy.

But the stunts can turn deadly. Earlier this month, a man from Michigan was killed by an explosive device at a similar event in Michigan.

And a huge wildfire in California in August 2020 was started by a gender-reveal device.

Pekny’s tragic death has renewed calls for such parties to be banned.
