According to a new patriotism poll, most Americans aren't particularly enamoured by their country. In fact, they're downright embarrassed, and people on social media have many answers as to why this could be.

According to Gallup, only 45 percent of Americans are 'extremely proud' to be American, which is the lowest number in the 19 years that the polling company has asked the question, reports the Huffington Post.

The decline in numbers promoted a call out from Fox and Friends on Twitter, who were confused by what could have caused the low polling figures. Taking to the social media site, they wrote:

A new poll shows only 45% of men and women in the U.S. are 'extremely proud' to be American. That is the lowest amount ever recorded by this poll. What do you think is causing the decline?

Many other Twitter users were very keen to provide Fox and Friends with lots, and lots, of reasons.

Children in cages, anyone?

Or, possibly, bigotry and cruelty? That might have something to do with it, too?

Or even, possibly, women's reproductive rights being curtailed, or perhaps even the situation at the border?

Wait, we've got it! It's because of the guy with the hair.

The guy in the straight jacket!

The guy in the clown wig who always hangs out with Kim Jong-un!

Oh, another wild guess... it's the children, isn't it!

Some were simply shocked to even be asked the question in the first place.

Ahh, gotta be Nike! That's the one.

Still absolutely no clue. Yep, no clue. None. Nothing. Nada.

That has to be a rhetorical question, right?

Little bit of a self-own there, Fox, huh?

Well, we reckon that about sums it up. Any other ideas, anyone?
