Black political activist Femi Oluwole has shared shocking racist abuse that he received on Twitter just minutes into 2020.
Oluwole shared a screengrab on Twitter, with the caption: “8 minutes. It took 8 goddamn minutes! Welcome to 2020.”
The abusive tweet, which insinuated that he is treacherous and should go to Africa, was posted in response to Oluwole wishing his followers a happy new year. Oluwole has been an outspoken critic of Brexit and campaigned publicly for a People's Vote.
Speaking to indy100, Oluwole blamed the racism on prime minister Boris Johnson’s rhetoric. He said:
If the prime minister can call gay people tank-topped bumboys and say black people have watermelon smiles, then of course everyone else can tell me to F off to Africa.
Thankfully, after Oluwole’s tweet calling out the abuse received thousands of likes, “Happy New Year Femi” began to trend.
He said the response was “beautiful”.
The beautiful thing is that hate triggers love... Just like when Trump's election led directly to a crowd of people clapping at a Muslim person praying in the middle of an American airport.
