Sometimes, speaking about your mental health isn’t easy – especially in a work environment when levels of stress can be very high.
But one woman was more honest than most when she sent an email to her team at work notifying them that she would be taking two days off to focus on her mental health.
Web developer Madalyn Parker’s email was short but candid, as she expressed hope that she will return to work "100% refreshed" the following week.
Luckily her boss thought the same, responding to the email in the best way possible. They wrote:
I just wanted to personally thank you for sending emails like this.
Every time you do, I use it as a reminder of the importance of using sick days for mental health – I cannot believe this is not standard practice at all organisations.
You are an example to us all, and help cut through stigma so we can all bring our whole selves to work.
With mental health being a central topic of discussion at the moment, many people on Twitter chimed in with their opinions on the boss' impressive reaction to the email.
While mental health days will hopefully be made available by right, it is largely dependent on the company to ensure a culture that affords employees comfort in taking them too.
