A dying veteran who asked for people to send him letters to read has been overwhelmed by the response he's getting

James Wiitamaki, an army veteran dying from cancer, has asked people to send him in letters to read.

That's all he's after.

He placed an advert asking in a local paper for people to write to him, without even letting his family know. But when they did find out, it was shared on Facebook by his great niece, Brenna Glodowski.

The advert reads:

James Wiitamaki is dying from cancer at the St. Cloud VA Hospital. He would like to receive letters from people.

Glodowski writes that sending in a card would make Wiitamaki, who served in Germany, ‘more than ecstatic’.

People have commented on Glodowski’s post to say they have sent a letter – and even to ask if they can visit him in hospital.
