The after effects of Brazil’s presidential election have been felt across the world.
The landmark vote saw far-right politician Jair Bolsonaro, or the “Trump of the tropics”, cruise to victory.
Bolsonaro has divided Brazil with misogynistic, homophobic and racist rhetoric. Having expressed his dislike for democracy, his critics fear that Brazil might fall back into authoritarianism.
But all is not lost. Pabllo Vittar, a 23 year-old drag queen and feminist, has been gaining attention online for becoming a voice for Brazil’s LGBT+ community. He has been leading the resistance against Bolsonaro, who has made offensive homophobic remarks including saying that he would prefer his son to die in an accident rather than turn out gay. Vittar has severed ties with any brands that have supported Bolsonaro.
With the future of Brazil’s LGBT+ community looking uncertain following the election, it looks like people like Vittar are going to be even more crucial in the months and years ahead.
