President-elect Donald Trump gave his first ever press conference this week.

And we can all be forgiven for being slightly distracted by other stories of a sexual nature circulating that day. However, distraction or not, that's no excuse not to be informed.

So there are five important points to take away from Mr Trump's speech, some of them possibly hinting at upcoming policy:

1. Industry

Trump expressed his gratitude towards car manufacturer Fiat Chrysler for deciding to expand its plants in Ohio and Michigan. He also said:

A lot of car companies are going to be moving in – big news is going to be announced over the next couple of weeks.

And it’s not just cars. He said billions of dollars will be saved through proper bidding:

I think a lot of industries will be coming back.  We have to get our drug industry coming back. The drug industry has been disastrous, they’ve been leaving left and right. They supply our drugs but don’t make them here, to a large extent.

The other thing we have to do is create new bidding procedures for the drug industry because they’re getting away with murder. Phrama has a lot of lobbies, a lot of lobbyists and a lot of power. And there’s very little bidding on drugs. We’re the largest buyer of drugs in the world and yet we don’t bid properly. We’re going to start bidding and we’re going to save billions of dollars over a period of time and were going to do that with a lot of other industries.

2. Defence

It’s no secret Trump thinks the US’s stealth jet programme has cost too much; a sentiment he shares with many others. He says it’s “Way way behind schedule and many many billons of dollars over budget”.

He said:

We’re going to do some big things on the F-35 programme and perhaps F-18 programme, and we’re going to get those costs way down, and we’re going to get the plane to be even better, and we’re going to have some competition and it’s going to be a beautiful thing.

3. Jobs

Trump stuck to his guns on job creation - but admitted he'd need a bit of luck to pull it off.

We’re going to create jobs, I said that I will be the greatest jobs producer that God ever created, and I mean that. We’re going to need a certain amount of things, including a bit of luck.

4. Border tax

Trump promised “major border tax” on companies who shift their jobs out of the US. He said:

You want to move your plant, and you think, as an example, you're going to build that plant in Mexico, and you're going to make your air conditioners or your cars, or whatever you're making, and you're going to sell them through what will be a very, very strong border. Not going to happen. You're going to pay a very large border tax.

5. Healthcare

Trump has made no secret of the fact he thinks Obamacare, which offers help for 44 million Americans without health insurance, should be repealed.

He said he hopes to “repeal and replace” the entire Act within one day, but said it “could be the same hour”. And in its place, Trump said:

We’re gonna get a health bill passed, we’re gonna get health care taken care of in this country. We’re going to have a health care that is far less expensive and far better.
