It turns out that when Trump said he wanted to buy Greenland, he really wasn’t joking.

Despite claiming last week that the idea to buy Greenland for “strategic reasons” was “not number one on the burner,” he’s now cancelling his upcoming trip to Denmark after the nation’s prime minister reaffirmed that Greenland isn’t actually for sale.

Trump was supposed to visit the country on September 2nd, at the invitation of Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II.

However, after the Danish prime minister described Trump’s suggestion to buy Greenland as “absurd”, he’s postponed the upcoming trip.

Naturally, he announced the cancellation via Twitter, saying:

Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.

His announcement has sparked outrage and incredulity from people in Greenland and on Twitter – read some of the best responses below.
