Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski wanted to make a point about Labour’s borrowing.

The MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham allegedly tweeted out a graph of the UK's national debt percentage of GDP, going back to 1995, along with the comment:

This is what happened under Labour massive borrowing. We are determined to ensure country gets back to balance asap

Only it would appear he didn’t look at the x-axis close enough.

That graph shows a sharp, continued increase in debt since around 2009. David Cameron became prime minister in 2010, and we’ve had Conservative Chancellor ever since then - during which debt has grown and grown.

The tweet appears to have been quickly deleted, but was captured by David Prescott, an advisor and speechwriter to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The graph appears to have originally come from a tweet by former Conservative Party deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft.

indy100 has contacted Mr Kawczynski's office for comment.
