A clip of CNN giving a rather blunt and damning assessment of Boris Johnson and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic has resurfaced on Twitter.
In March 2020, right at the start of the pandemic, the prime minister gave a grim outlook at what was lying ahead of us in those coming months.
At the time, Johnson said: “Many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time.” The PM was heavily criticised for the comment at the time with some on social media comparing it to a scene from Shrek where the evil Lord Farquaad attempted to convince people to take part in a dangerous expedition to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon.
The character voiced by John Lithgow says: “Some of you may die but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.” The comparisons with Johnson’s speech were stark and CNN played the two clips back-to-back to just hit home how grimly shocking Johnson’s comment was.
After Monday’s announcement from the UK government that they would be lifting all Covid-19 restrictions in England from 19th July, despite cases now rising again thanks to the Delta variant, the CNN clip was reshared by Tim Walker who compared it to the network’s critical reporting on Donald Trump.
It remains to be seen by how many cases of Covid-19 will increase in England once restrictions are lifted but you can guarantee that it won’t quash anyone wishing to mock Johnson and the UK government, even CNN.
