Thanks to the wisdom of (many, many) scientists and one 16-year-old from Sweden, most people are aware that we’re in the middle of a climate emergency.
Apart from Boris Johnson, apparently, who’s now being rinsed by Jeremy Corbyn for his decision to take a private jet from Donacaster to Darlington, cutting his journey time by a whopping… 28 minutes.
Johnson’s flight – which was only two-thirds full – somewhat contradicts his claim last month that there “is nothing more conservative than protecting our environment”.
And Corbyn thought so too, posting a meme on Twitter that pointed out the hypocrisy of Johnson’s actions.
For the record, the equivalent train journey would have deposited the PM in Darlington in under an hour – with plenty of time to get to his next photo opportunity and dodge more difficult questions about why four-year-olds with suspected pneumonia are being forced to sleep on hospital floors.
The Conservative manifesto claims the Tories will “lead the global fight against climate change” and cut the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.
It’s a little lighter on details of exactly how they’re planning to do this, mentioning the climate crisis – which they term ‘climate change’ – only 10 times in total.
In comparison, Labour and the Lib Dems mention a ‘climate emergency’ five times as much in their manifestos.
Johnson also declined to take part in the first ever Leaders' Climate Debate this month, with Channel 4 replacing the errant PM with a melting ice sculpture, which potentially had more to say.
