Controversial conservative commentator Ben Shapiro has suggested that it's somebody's own fault if they have to work two jobs to make ends meet.

The right-wing pundit who is no stranger to eyebrow-raising statements made the comment during Wednesday's episode of his self-titled podcast, which is uploaded to YouTube.

In the episode titled 'Practicality vs. Moral Character?' Shapiro attempted to discredit statistics published in June by the Census that showed that around 13 million Americans currently have more than one job.

In a clip that has now been viewed more than 5 million times on Twitter after it was uploaded by Media Matters researcher Jason Campbell, Shapiro says the following:

If you had to work more than one job to have a roof over your head or food on the table, you probably shouldn’t have taken the job that’s not paying you enough. That’d be a you problem.

Also, it's not true that the vast majority of Americans are currently working two jobs. It's just not true.

Shapiro goes on to reference the aforementioned Census report and does a good job of skewering the statistics to fit his views.

Needless to say, his bizarre statement has been widely criticised and mocked on social media.

Shapiro has since attempted to defend himself but potentially made the situation even worse by admitting that he has actually worked multiple jobs in the past.

Yeah, great job Ben...
